Best Restaurants in Bangalore

Visiting India’s Cyber Capital? Here’s how to chill out

State government curfews have significantly dulled Bangalore’s nightlife but don’t despair if you can’t stay out till late, eating, drinking or dancing the night away. What you can enjoy instead is some of the best alfresco dining in India, given the city’s wonderful weather. Here are some all-time favourites and promising new diners in town:

* The 100-feet boutique restaurant on 100 feet road, Indiranagar: bathed in candlelight, with soothing music, it remains a perfect evening spot. The boutique Levitate that the restaurant houses is stocked with some interesting wear and accessories. The pastas are above average, the drinks average, but one comes back to this restaurant set in a white cottage, on a pebbled pathway, for its classy, understated ambience.

* Spiga: has also been an old favourite for its excellent Italian food, as well as for its charming interiors, which are sparse but chic. The restaurant shut down recently much to the dismay of Bangaloreans, but reopened last month, switching its address from Vital Mallaya Road to St Marks Road.

* Paparazzi, at Manipal Centre, and 13th Floor, at Barton Centre: Both score high on location. Perched on the top floor of their respective buildings, these restaurants tower over a blinking city. Best for a few leisurely drinks.

* Opus, on Palace Cross Road: Is still as fresh as ever even after a good five-six years of starting out. For live music shows and great Goan food, this is the place to be over the weekend. Try the fun karaoke nights at this pebbled garden restaurant.

* Among the newer lot, Caperberry and Tapas Lounge, nearabouts MG Road, is promising. It offers French, Spanish and Italian gourmet within tasteful interiors. Though the pricing is on the higher side, a reasonable three course lunch buffet is currently on offer at Rs 400+ taxes.

* I was intrigued by Kyra, a new ‘performing arts restaurant’ at Indiranagar, which hosts live shows of puppetry, theatrics, world music, jazz, contemporary dance and so on, at its amphitheatre. Interesting concept. Serves Indian and Continental food.
